First Week of the Last Year – an Update

Friday is the first day of school, in the last year of high school, for my youngest. I can’t believe he’s old enough to be a Senior already! I remember when he was still a little kid whose hair went all blonde after a week at the beach, and he hated when I called him Sandy:

Vacation 2006 – Sandy was 9.

And now he’s a 6′ kid who hates when I call him, period. One more season of marching band. One more year of hollering at him to do his homework AND turn it in. One more year of hoping he leaves high school with most of the tools he needs to live a good life. Maybe he will even know what he wants to be when he grows up; I don’t, though I have spent nearly 30 years eliminating things 🙂

Anyway, on to the stitching bits…. On Wednesday night at IHOP, I worked on my Stoney Creek Life is a Journey series, beginning the 3 block. Not a lot done, since I counted the border multiple times to make sure I had it right before closing it in. This block. Enjoy the Little Things, probably has the least amount of stitching of the 6 – hopefully that doesn’t equate to taking the longest, like it often does 🙂 Here’s the bit I did:

And then here’s the overall to date (in all it’s wrinkled glory – if you were shoved in a ziplock bag for months, you’d be wrinkled, too):

The rest of the week, I was working away at Witches Wheel, which is well past the halfway mark now, and may even need to have beads put on in a week or so, with any luck:

That’s it for the stitching news; this week, more of the same. I haven’t been taking many photos lately, since there’s not much going on outside other than overcast skies and the occasional thunderstorm; we are having normal August temps, finally, this week, after having temps much below normal for the last several weeks. The cucumbers are still growing like weeds, though I have serious doubts that any of the pepper plants will come back from the hornworm; I did see one lone banana pepper in there yesterday, it might be ready for picking – I couldn’t reach it without taking the fence down, which I wasn’t prepared to do, so, later. I may get a couple of the Mexie Bells to mature & ripen; it looks like all the rest of the bells are not going to do anything 🙁 NEXT year, the garden is moving to the other side of the house, somewhere, and expanding = would really like a row of green beans & a row of corn, two other things I really hate to buy…. It will all depend on the weather and if we get as late a start as we did this year; they are predicting a very bad winter this year, too, made worse by the fact that our current administration has closed several coal plants, which will cause energy costs to skyrocket, and possibly a shortage, if winter is anything like last year in the eastern half of the country. Anyway, before I let loose on that particular rant, I can show you this photo, taken this week, of our lone Indigo Bunting (I assume there’s a Mrs. Bunting somewhere in the area, I just haven’t been able to identify her yet):

We have the fattest squirrels in Georgia – they’ve gone through a 50lb bag of seed in 2 weeks, the damn tree rats. AND we also have FLYING squirrels, which are probably what’s been living in the chimney 🙁 You know, when you live in the woods, you just have to be prepared to share your space (especially when you offer up FREE FOOD). I think we need a couple more outdoor cats….

Until next week, Happy Stitching!

  1. Great stitching progress! We’ve been having a cooler and less humid than usual summer.. which I’ve been really enjoying. It’s been nice having the windows open and fresh air in the house all summer.

  2. Great progress, Karen! I bet you will be glad to be done with all the school stuff after this year. Freedom at last! lol

  3. oh, but that blue bird is ADORABLE!
and are you kidding?! fat squirrels and flying squirrels?! I would be so in love with them (I suppose it might have to do with the fact that we don’t have neither of them. not a single one. ever.) I would actually keep the cats inside or on a close watch so that they don’t interfere with the fluffs!
oh, and that picture of Sandy! I bet he’s going to miss his mom so badly once he moves out!
your stitching is great, as usual. keep working on that wheel, it’s going to be beadilicious! 😛

    1. Just FYI – squirrels are cute, but along with that, they ARE rodents, and if they get in your house (which they have) they can do a LOT of damage. SO while I do enjoy seeing them OUTSIDE, it’s another story when I hear them inside my walls & attic, chewing and running and destroying things 🙁 One of the trades we make for living in the woods, I guess 🙂

  4. Great stitching as always – the witches really pop on the orange fabby! I love the Stoney Creek series.
