The Zipper – an Update

On April 29, 1913, Swedish-born engineer Gideon Sundback of Hoboken, N.J., received a U.S. patent for a “separable fastener” — later known as the zipper. Well done, sir, well done.

In other news – record rainfall yesterday. Yay. The irises will be happy. I, on the other hand, am over it – now that the pollen should be mostly done, I’d like a few days of sunshine before the summer hits, please. Thanks. And the lake IS full, so just a wee break, eh? Here are some tunes for you, performed by the Flowery Branch Jazz Band and Sheer Panic Steel Drum Band and the Steel Band 7:16, at the Coffee, Calypso and Jazz Concert that I missed Tuesday because I was recovering from my minor procedure 🙁 Here are a few selections:

Day O by Sheer Panic, Margaritaville by the 7:16 SDB, Under the Sea by Sheer Panic, Moondance by the Jazz Band, Oye Como Va by the Jazz Band, Frankenstein by the Jazz Band, and lastly, Rant & Rave by Sheer Panic. There were several other songs done by all groups, sure wish I’d been there. Thank god for YouTube 🙂

In stitching news, I got some progress in on PS Whoo’s There, between Thursday at the IHOP and Saturday’s PINS get together:

PS Whoo's There as of 4/27. DMC on 32ct Lambswool jobelan.
PS Whoo’s There as of 4/27. DMC on 32ct Lambswool jobelan.

And the rest of the week, I slaved away on Samplar 4 Saisons, trying to get all of the Summer portion completed. Man, what a LOT of branches and leaves in this section! I would spend an hour or so on Wattle n Daub (tree bits), then an hour or so on Milligrubs (Summer bits), back & forth. And at 10:00 last night, I was 2 letters and one motif short of completing the Summer quarter! But I am close, and hope to complete it tonight, and then decide where to go from there…

So, for this week, since I am still excited to work on 4 Saisons, I will. I may work on the tree here in the middle, which will allow me to use BOTH of the new colors, and will let me finish a couple more pages, maybe 🙂 On Saturday, a group of us here are field-tripping to Greenville, SC, to Panda’s Crossing, which has cross stitch AND beads – I could be in some serious trouble… Good thing they don’t actually have shopping enabled on their website, though being almost as close as Abecedarius is on the other side of Atlanta, I’ll only be safe so long as the too-lazy-to-get-in-the-car-for-hours holds out 🙂 Of course, I will have a stash report on Monday 🙂  Happy Stitching to everyone!

SOS – an Update

101 years ago, the Titanic went down. And I find it fitting that we mark the anniversary by making it Tax Day 🙁 But we actually got those done in March this year, though I didn’t send my payment to the Federalis until this weekend – was going to wait until today like usual, but stuck it in the box on Saturday, so by the time my PO loses it, same difference. But back to the other April 15th thing, here’s another good website on it. I will always be intrigued by the sinking of that ship, and if anyone ever does really build one again, I’d really, really like to go on it, even though the thought of crossing that much open water in a boat just freaks me out – I AM a land animal, and I would NOT have made a good Pilgrim… Actually, come to think of it, wasn’t that fond of flying over it, either, though on one trip to/from London, I did do the loop over the tip of Greenland – that was kinda cool, once I ignored just how far out of the way we were going to get to the US….

Weed Season has officially begun...
Weed Season has officially begun…
And YES, that IS a Fire ant on there 🙁 Bastard…

You know, since I finished those two projects the week before, it would seem that I needed to start a new travel project, TOO! I have 3-4 in the bag, and was really flipping between Amethyst Snowflake – I even stopped at HL before going to the IHOP to get a new ball of white perle, as the one I had was about 8 shades from white – and the 3rd Prairie Schooler Halloween piece. And in the end, the PS was already in the Qs and ready to go, so that’s what I started. And I counted this top border at LEAST 4 times, so if I’m wrong later, well, that’s all I can do 🙂

The rest of the week, I worked on Beaded Dragonfly Tile, making slow progress on the black. I have a TON of beads on it already, and not even made a dent into what’s on there in total 🙂 I had hoped to have the buds done by the end of the weekend, but just didn’t get there – I am going slowly on this, and still, seem to make better progress at night, which you’d think would be the opposite. I also had to re-do one wing of beads on the left dragonfly – I started one row one thread too far left, so had to pull out a couple of rows (not so easy with that many colors of beads) and put them back in correctly. Better the 2nd time 🙂  Anyway, here’s where I stopped last night:

Chatelaine Beaded Dragonfly Tile, on 28ct black Jobelan - this is all DMC & beads so far.

Now that I have the rest of the buds in, I see the right dragonfly’s top right wing is one thread out, so I’ll have to fix that; the middle is right, so I missed a thread in there somewhere on the long side, which ought to be easy enough to correct. I think I will keep working on this just long enough to finish stitching these buds & leaves, and maybe finish just the middle beading, and then put it up and get Samplar 4 Saisons or Halloween Quaker out – I need to move those along, I’m ready to finish more things.

It stopped raining long enough to take pics of the dogwoods before they are done, which will probably be this week.

So that’s the loose plan for the week – BDT for a day or two, then one of the samplers that are screaming to be done. Chat Noir is also calling me, so maybe he’ll come out next week, and I’ll rotate between him & a sampler. Jackie is working on Dragon Quaker right now, and I realllyyyy want to get my two current samplers done so I can get it & IC CdC out & going in their places 🙂 I have a medical procedure scheduled for next week (girl stuff), so will probably lose a day to being on drugs! I just can’t believe April is half over already – it’s going too fast, though I have a 16yo Sophomore who would disagree…. Until next week, Happy Stitching!

Check THAT out - got a blue jay and a cardinal in the SAME SHOT! Of course, my Johvah's WItness-gangmember-redneck-dog slayer neighbors don't like me taking pictures in the neighborhhod, even though I DO IT EVERY SPRING; but hey, I don't like them decorating with dead riding mowers so, :b~~~~~~~~~~~

Back to the Grind – an Update

Vacation’s over <pout>. As much as I thrive on routine, boy, it sure gets old 🙂 At least spring HAS actually arrived, and I hope it’s here to stay this time. Along with the insane tree pollen counts, we have 80s predicted for this week, and storms by Thursday to wash some of the pollen away. All of which means we had the heat on in the morning this weekend, and the A/C on in the afternoon. I am also watching for signs the irises will send forth shoots that end in glorious blooms; so far, just leaves, but since it WAS below freezing 10 days ago, I’ll give ’em a few days before I start getting too anxious 🙂 The lilies along the driveway are coming up all over, despite the weeds’ best attempts to smother them – I pulled quite a few piles of junk out yesterday, just enough to piss off the fire ants 🙁 I have no idea who came up with those creatures, but wow, thanks.

So, as noted in my last post, with the 2 finishes, I did start Beaded Dragonfly Tile on Friday. And as I suspected, it is slow going on the black jobelan. I’ve spent most of the weekend trying to get accustomed to it, and have a new taplight to use for my uplight, but still seem to make my best progress after the sun goes down. I’m not sure if it’s because the lighting works better at night, or if it’s just because, even on vacation, the brain isn’t really ready to stitch until evening. Or because I am currently about 2/3 through Season 1 of Revenge 🙂 And since this piece has so many beads, I am beading as I go, so I’ve had to come up with a way to have an assortment of beads out together; I came up with this, on my home-made industrial strength Tacky BoB:

11 of the delicas - I can maybe jam one more on here if needed, or I'll have to use the other side of my BoB for the rest...
11 of the delicas – I can maybe jam one more on here if needed, or I’ll have to use the other side of my BoB for the rest…

I got through the first bud by Saturday, only to discover I hadn’t gotten one of the colors, so a trip to Hobby Lobby was in order – and I only got that one skein of DMC, and a piece of evenweave (I didn’t think using my 40% off coupon on a .40 skein was a legitimate use, so I HAD to get something for it, you see). So I got the blanks filled in Saturday night, along with the backstitching, and on Sunday, started beading. Here is how far I got – keep in mind it’s not easy to get a good picture of black fabric, for whatever reason 🙁

Beaded Dragonfly Tile by Chatelaine - on 28ct black jobelan, using, so far DMC, RG PTB, and BEADS!

Sure hope those dragonfly outlines are in the right places 🙂 We’ll see later on, I guess! BTW, all 11 of those delicas shown on my BoB are in what I’ve stitched so far, even if you can’t tell that there are 11 colors of bead in there already – man are some of them close! I sure hope the open tubes (inside my floss box at the moment) don’t get dumped out, it’ll be hell trying to get these close colors separated 🙂

Spanish Moss - the Kid wants a tree with this, though we are too far north...

So, for this week, I’ll keep on with Dragonfly at home, and then I haven’t decided what to start for my travel project – another PS Halloween pieces, or Amethyst Snowflake? I Need to zig-zag Snowflake’s fabric, in case that’s what I choose 🙂 I will get one of my other two samplers out next week, I think – I’m in the mood to finish stuff again, though Halloween Quaker is closer to done that Samplar 4 Saisons. Maybe I’ll switch off between the two. Don’t know yet. Check back next week to see what I manage to accomplish – it could be anything! Happy Stitching!
